Which emergency room should I go to?

For a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest ER regardless of wait. Otherwise, ER Compass ranks nearby ERs by drive time plus current wait so you can pick the fastest. Urgent care centres are listed separately.

Are emergency room wait times accurate?

Wait times are self-reported by hospitals and update every 15–30 minutes; ERs always see the sickest patients first, so a shorter posted wait does not guarantee you'll be seen sooner. ER Compass labels each number with its source and freshness, and archives the data openly.

Is the emergency room open right now?

Most Canadian emergency departments are open 24/7, but some rural ERs close overnight. ER Compass shows open/closed status and a phone number to call ahead for hospitals that don't publish a live wait.

Why some ERs stay stretched: emergency-physician supply across Ontario, beside the waits we measure. This is regional context, not a count of who is on shift at any one hospital. In an emergency, go to your nearest ER or call 911.
